Community Volunteer Income Tax Service

Need a hand to prepare your tax return?

If you do not know how to prepare your income tax and benefit return, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program may be able to help you.
Community organization volunteers prepare returns for eligible taxpayers who have low to modest income and a simple tax situation.

Are you eligible for help?

To find out if you are eligible for help, use the income levels shown below. For each additional dependant, add $2,500 to the family income. You should not have interest income of more than $1,000.
Maximum income levels
Taxpayer status
Family income
Single person
up to $30,000
Couple
up to $40,000
One adult with one child
up to $35,000
Community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set eligibility criteria for tax filers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity.
Eligible taxpayers normally served by the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program include:
  • Aboriginal people
  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Seniors
  • Social Assistance Recipients
  • Students
Volunteers do not prepare complex returns, such as returns for individuals who:
  • have self-employment income
  • have business or rental income and expenses
  • have capital gains or losses
  • have employment expenses
  • file for bankruptcy
  • deceased in the year.
