The Executive Director is responsible for establishing & executing major
goals & objectives for the organization. Implements policies established
by the Board of Directors. Provides leadership, direction & guidance of
Ontario Association of the Deaf organization’s activities, projects &
programs. Analyzes & evaluates the effectiveness of all organization
operations. Develops & maintains organizational structure & effective
workplace & staffing. Represents the organization to regulatory bodies,
other agencies, community & civic organizations, donors, funders, members
& the general public.
LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reports to the Executive Committee & Board of Directors
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Attends regular OAD board, DOP Family, OAD AGM & sub-committee meetings.
* Directs & oversees DOP/OAD short & long term strategic plans.
* Provides leadership to organization personnel through effective objective
setting, delegation & communication.
* Executes human resources & financial policies.
* Oversees the preparation of office procedure manuals & transition plans.
* Develops & implements operational plans, policies & goals that further
strategic objectives & goals.
* Develops, maintains & up-dates job descriptions, staff duties &
responsibilities pertinent to the organization.
* Conducts performance appraisals as required.
* Recruit, supervise, discipline & terminate staff as needed.
* Writes grant applications & proposals.
* Submits all information, reports & records as requested or required by
law to appropriate government officials and/or the board of directors.
* Works with the Board of Directors on governance policy issues by providing
support & by initiating approved recommendations or actions.
* Recommends to the Board changes to policies & procedures that would
improve the organization.
* Ensures compliance to minimum standards in accordance with all government
legislation, regulations & guidelines pertinent to the organization's role
as an employer & non-profit agency.
* Maintains a competent and effective managerial staff.
* Delegates authority & responsibility to office staff.
* Conducts staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information.
* Oversees office maintenance & related emergencies.
* Oversees the contracts, funding submissions & regular reporting between
the staff & community resources, funding sources (local, provincial &
* Monitors internal protocols for support service data management & policies
to ensure the Deaf Outreach Program is providing adequate support for
DPHAs that request services.
* Consults with community partners & DPHAs in order to update & complete
strategic plan for the Deaf Outreach Program (DOP).
* Provide reports (financial & statistical) on DOP client services & analysis
of service delivery.
FINANCIAL PLANNING & MANAGEMENT:
* Plans for new projects, programs & activities through analysis,
correspondence, budgetary projections.
* Maintains budgets & ensures ongoing balance of funds in relations
to projects & activities performed.
* Maintains awareness of the complete financial, statistical & accounting
records of the organization & its projects/programs.
* Ensures that operating costs established in the annual budget are met &
the control of operating expenses is within budget & in a timely manner.
* Signs all cheques.
* Ensures that appropriate salary & wage structures are maintained.
* Maintains an effective & cost efficient office environment.
* Determines staff training/mentoring and/or equipment needs of clerical &
administrative employees, taking into account annual budget allocations.
* Executive Director usually works in an office environment, but the mission
of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
* Executive Director performs a standard 40-hour a week & additionally will
work evening, weekends & overtime hours to accommodate activities such as
Board meetings & representing the organization at public events.
* Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, Office Management or diploma
related to management/administration/social sciences.
* Knowledge of human resources, financial & project managements.
* Knowledge of leadership & management principles as they relate to
* Knowledge of current Deaf community challenges & opportunities relating
to the mission of the organization.
* Experience in grant-writing & reporting.
* Able to work under pressure & to meet deadlines.
* Nonprofit experience is an asset.
* Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Web Based Applications & Database
* Bilingual Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) & written English.
